I have an idea for Uber, and I’m calling it Uber: Beacons. It actually came to me while using Hailo. It’s such an obvious idea that just needs to exist.
During busy nights Uber should allow the passenger to use the screen of their phone as a colorful beacon. The customer would then hold their phone in the air with the screen facing oncoming traffic. The driver would be notified of the passenger’s colour, if and when the passenger is using their beacon. This small product feature has immense value:
- Drivers can easily identify their customers from more than a block away.
- It acts as a form of visual confirmation, thus preventing the wrong people from getting into the wrong car – which has happened to me before.
- Using colours allows Uber to diversify the beacons if and when there are many customers within close proximity.
- And perhaps the most exciting of all – it’s an active piece of marketing. People are literally waving your brand in the air. People will ask questions. The name Uber will come up a lot. You can’t beat word of mouth.
I’m on Twitter, let me know what you think.
